All performances will be held on March 9-10, 2012 at Davis Middle School. Musicians of all ages and abilities, from young beginners to adults and teachers are encouraged to perform. Each performance is evaluated by our visiting clinicians and is open to the public. All styles of music are welcome, and memorization is strongly recommended. All performers will receive a certificate of participation, award ribbon and written comments.
Some outstanding student performers (High School age and under) will be selected to perform in the Saturday evening Honors Concert with a chance of winning a scholarship to MAT Camp in July, 2012. All decisions are final. Students can opt out of the competition if they wish.
New! Songwriting/Composition Showcase - Musicians of all ages are invited to submit original songs and/or compositions. Pieces are to be submitted through audio recording, such as mp3 or CD. Pieces can be performed either by the songwriter/composer or others. Outstanding submissions will be featured at the Honors Concert.
Festival registration fee is $20. This includes your performance and evaluation by the clinician, admission to Mike Strickland in concert on March 9, and workshops. Financial aid is available. Workshops
Jazz/Pop Piano Workshop for intermediate/advanced level students. How to improvise, including understanding chords and music theory, improving your ear for music, and how to have fun playing music without music! Clinician: Mike Strickland.
How to Give a Great Performance for beginning/intermediate level piano students. This class will strengthen your ability to perform confidently. We will discuss how to practice a piece before a performance as well as improve stage presence and focus. Clinician: Elizabeth Strickland.
Going Beyond the Notes for intermediate/advanced level piano students. In this class we'll discuss how to strengthen various musical techniques and learn about the basics of artistry. We will also go over some more advanced skills like tone production, musical structure and communicating effectively with an audience. Clinician: Elizabeth Strickland.
Workshop for Brass Players. Learn the tricks of trade that professionals use for practice technique specific to brass instruments. Move to the next level in your technique! Clinician: Dr. Shannon Roberts.
Workshop for Woodwind Players. Learn the tricks of trade that professionals use for practice technique specific to woodwind instruments. Move to the next level in your technique! Clinician: Dr. Shannon Roberts.
Vocal Fundamentals - Master your instrument as you practice the basics of vocal production, including technique, theory, and performance. Yes, there may be some lying down on the job! Clinician: Kristie Arnold.
Vocal Improvisation - Learn where to start, how to listen, and how to deliver in this hands-on approach to beginner/intermediate vocal jazz improvisation. Clinician: Kristie Arnold.
Vocal Reading Session - Jump right in with your classmates and expand your style chops as we work up an ensemble jazz chart to performance speed. Bring your sing! Clinician: Kristie Arnold.
